Equalities and Brexit: A committee session to identify key themes

Background

The External Affairs and Additional Legislation Committee organised a meeting with expert witnesses to hear about the key issues for equalities in Wales in the context of Brexit. The meeting helped the Committee understand some of the key equalities issues raised by Brexit with a view to mainstreaming these considerations into its future work.

Evidence gathering

The Committee has considered some of these issues previously in its report Implications for Wales of leaving the European Union .

The Assembly’s Equality, Local Government and Communities Committee conducted an inquiry into Human Rights in Wales that included consideration of the impact of the UK’s withdrawal from European Union on human rights protection in Wales.

On 26 February 2018 the External Affairs and Additional Legislation Committee held a series of panel sessions on the impact of Brexit on equalities.

In response to the key themes session, the Committee agreed to write a joint letter (PDF, 332KB) with the Equality, Local Government and Communities Committee to the First Minister highlighting the key issues raised in both committees relating to Brexit. The First Minister responded (PDF, 300KB) to the joint letter on 16 May 2018.

On 28 June 2018, the Chair of the External Affairs and Additional Legislation Committee wrote to (PDF, 147KB) the First Minister to seek further clarification about the implication of the passage of the European Withdrawal Act 2018 for equalities and Brexit in Wales. The First Minister responded (PDF, 313KB) on 23 July 2018.
