Historic Environment

Inquiry5

The Culture, Welsh Language and Communications Committee agreed to hold an inquiry into Wales’s historic environment. This inquiry followed on from the Committee’s summer consultation in 2016 where the public highlighted ‘preserving local cultural heritage’ as one of the key areas which the Committee should prioritise.

Between July and August 2017 the committee asked people for written responses which addressed the following:

·      Implementation of the Historic Environment Act;

·      Protection for listed buildings and scheduled monuments;

·      Protection for buildings and monuments at risk;

·      Facilitating collaboration within the sector;

·      Maximising the value of heritage tourism and Cadw’s work to meet its income generation targets;

·      Delivery of Baroness Andrews’ Culture and Poverty report;

·      Collaboration with heritage assets in the private sector;

·      Cadw’s future status.

The Committee spoke to interested parties at their meetings between October 2017 and December 2017.

Report

The Committee published a report of their findings in April 2018.
