Registered Social Landlords, more commonly called housing associations, are third sector organisations that are involved in a range of relatively diverse activities that often go beyond the provision of rented housing. For example, many are involved in the provision of homes for low cost home ownership, the provision of housing related support, care homes and the provision of student accommodation.
Associations also play a role in creating employment and training opportunities, particularly through awarding contracts for the development of new homes, and maintenance and improvement of existing homes to meet the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.
The number of housing associations in Wales has increased in recent years thanks to the 11 stock transfers that have now taken place.
The Committee considered and undertook an inquiry into Inquiry into the Regulatory oversight of Housing Associations, reporting in August 2017.
