EXHIBITION: Porthcawl’s Secret Tragedy

Description: An exhibition telling the story of the Liberty ship SS Samtampa and the Mumbles lifeboat, Edward Prince of Wales disaster that happened on 23rd April 1947. The Samtampa was driven across the channel in a hurricane force storm and forced onto the rocks at Sker Point Porthcawl. The Mumbles lifeboat attempted a rescue but both vessels were lost with all hands. A total of 47 seamen died, all asphyxiated by the 600 tons of heavy fuel from the ruptured tanks. The exhibition will commemorate the 70th anniversary of this little known South Wales tragedy
