Physical punishment is an outdated form of punishment. If you could police how every smack was inflicted, I would be of the opinion this should be left to the parent to decide. Unfortunately, that is impossible leaving a very fine line between punishment and abuse. I am personally of the opinion if a parent feels the need to smack a child then they have already lost control of the situation, therefore, not making them the best person to impose such a punishment. A blanket ban would protect everyone involved.

It would be disappointing if all this did was lead to imposing a fine on parents. At present there feels like a fine for everything. Family support, counselling is needed for repeat offenders but where will this budget come from.

No points about this bill but the M4 relief road can not come soon enough!
